This is a 'known issue'. It has been going on since about July.
It is not clear if it effected everyone at the same time.
Obviously as you know Apple IDs can be used as AIM Screen Names with @mac.com ending ones working for trial accounts, Lapsed paid for ones and those converted to MobileMe and then iCloud (currently active for other things)
MobileMe (@me.com) ones only work if you linked them to iCloud.
There are not problems with @icloud.com ones.
From the iChat app you get Jabber and AIM accounts that could Video and Audio Only plus Screen Share connections.
All these use SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) which is text based and uses a connecting server to do so.
Apple have their own Server called SNATMAP.
It works like this:-
You send the Invite that will be visible on the other end.
As you do this, in the background your computer connects to the SNATMAP server.
As the other end accepts so it does as well.
You then get a behind the scenes second SIP invite which is like a text based version of an old manual telephone exchange.
The text contains word like 'ringing' 'trying', 'Acknowledge' and 'Bye' plus some others.
On LAN based calls (Bonjour or if you have two computers on your LAN with different AIM Screen Names ) then the calls will work.
What they are not doing is connecting on the Internet (For people at different locations).

I have reported this to the Hosts (Anyone achieving Level 6 here can do that sort of Post) who say they have passed it onwards.
Messages Help seems to suggest you are still supposed to be able to the 'iChat Method' as well as the new iMessages Method that started in Yosemite.
However the Menus suggests Screen Sharing this way will stop from El Capitan onwards.
I have computer that will boot into Leopard, Snow Leopard and this iMac in El Capitan.
I can Bonjour between all in a 3 way video chat. (Something the FaceTime invocation cannot do for iMessages)
Form Yosemite Onwards the iMessages account can start a text chat and then use the Details option top right to then Start an FaceTime Video or Audio chat or do Screen Sharing.
This invokes the Screen Sharing App (After you have set System Preferences > Sharing > Screen Sharing to be ON and allow Anyone).
It includes a Audio chat like the 'iChat Method' that lasts up until Messages 8 in Yosemite (or would if the server worked).

This is the correct page even though it has not been updated since Snow Leopard and iChat 5.0.3
This means you will have to include in the free text area some of the info in the lower drop downs (particularly about which version you have).
If your family are on Yosemite or above you can use FaceTime and the iMessages method of Screen Sharing.
Otherwise it is going to need a different app.
